What is Esthetic Dentistry?

Aesthetic dentistry is a specialty of dentistry that solves problems related to oral health and aesthetic harmony of the mouth in its entirety. Esthetic dentistry could be defined as an application of art and science aimed at developing or highlighting beauty in the form of a smile.

The smile is one of the most important facial expressions that differentiates the human being from the rest of the animals. He uses it as part of the language, expressing joy happiness or pleasure. From the anatomical point of view, the smile can be analyzed by studying each of its components: lips, gums and teeth.

Methods used for dental esthetics:

Depending on the needs of the patient, I use the following methods:

  • Minimally invasive porcelain veneers
  • Lithium disilicate
  • Zirconia
  • Teeth whitening

Below you can see detailed information on each of them, when they are used and benefits.

Minimally invasive porcelain veneers

These veneers are very thin and are designed to cover the surface of the teeth to which they have been applied. The dental structure remains intact and is only altered when necessary.

The veneers that are minimally invasive help patients to preserve their enamel, which is a great attraction. Both the traditional veneers and the minimally invasive porcelain veneer are highly aesthetic and can be expected to offer years of durability.

Moderately covering dental discolorations, correcting minor misalignments and rotation of the front teeth, and reshaping into a pin and making the teeth smaller are some of the minimally invasive improvements that porcelain veneers can provide.

The Lithium Disilicate

The lithium disilicate, the ideal option for dental restoration.

The main objective of dental prosthetics is to restore the damage present in the teeth, both to improve the image and to recover masticatory functions, hygiene and some care.

The appearance of lithium disilicate meant a revolution in the dental industry. These dental prostheses not only optimize the aesthetic expectations of patients but also provide more functional benefits, strength and adaptability in a single product.

It is a high strength ceramic material, produced from a process of control of nucleation and crystallization of glass through heat. It is a versatile system with a polishing capacity, so it offers restorations with high aesthetics and very resistant materials.

What are the benefits?

Dental materials have greatly improved their quality due to extensive analysis and technological advances. The lithium disilicate manages to go almost unnoticed, since it obtains a natural hue, matching the exact color of the natural tooth and maintaining it for a very long period of time.

In addition to this aesthetic benefit, this material provides durability and is less susceptible to fractures. It has a flexural strength of 360 to 400 MPa and allows the use of conventional cementation. This also allows the restorations to be more durable.
Another feature of lithium disilicate is the high degree of translucency, which, unlike other materials, does not require the application of coating ceramics to obtain it.

The main benefits of lithium disilicate are:

  • Durability
  • Resistance
  • Translucency
  • High aesthetic expectations
  • Adaptability and comfort
  • Durable restorations
  • Easy to use
  • Natural tonality
  • Low wear resistance

Zirconium

The use of zirconium in esthetic dentistry restorative treatments is very recurrent since it is a hard and biocompatible material that allows aesthetically perfect prostheses to be made.

Zirconium is a mineral of the class of silicates completely biocompatible and for its excellent properties is one of the most currently used in aesthetic dental treatments.

Applications of zirconium in dentistry

The ever growing aesthetic demands of patients in dentistry stimulate the great advances in the development of new and better dental materials, seeking to assimilate them to the natural tissues both aesthetically and functionally. In this sense, one of the most important discoveries of the last 20 years has been the implementation of zirconium, one of the best ceramic products that currently exist for dental reconstructions.

Zirconium prostheses are metal free, which gives the prosthesis a pleasant appearance and characteristics similar to those of your natural teeth.

Another major drawback of conventional dental prostheses is that they are not biocompatible and therefore in some patients with metal allergy (nickel, chromium or cobalt) porcelain metal prostheses could not be made.

In contrast zirconium is a material that has no metal, so it does not produce any type of allergy and is 100% biocompatible with the oral cavity, oral mucosa and other tissues of the mouth.

The main advantages of aesthetic zirconia prostheses designed are:

  • High transparency
  • White color and adaptable to the color of natural teeth.
  • Absence of grayish edges such as ceramic metal prostheses.
  • It is a metal-free prosthesis.
  • Excellent biocompatibility
  • Good characteristics in dentistry and highly resistant to fracture.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is an aesthetic dental treatment that reduces the original color of the teeth by several shades, leaving teeth whiter and brighter.

The whitening of the teeth allows to eliminate most of the stains produced by extrinsic causes such as tea, coffee and other infusions, cigarettes and red wine, among other substances and foods. However, not all dental stains or obscurations are removable or can be improved through tooth whitening and may require other types of aesthetic dental treatments such as the use of porcelain veneers or crowns.

Usually a whitening is performed in our office that lasts approximately one hour, with which the patient already sees significant changes and a complementary treatment is indicated in the home, with the respective indications of the dentist. This treatment at high concentrations can be repeated as a maintenance after six months to a year, depending on the severity of the spots or pigmentations that the patient presents. In general, although it depends on the condition of the teeth of each patient, it is important and necessary to perform a professional dental cleaning (ultrasound + professional brushing) prior to the realization of the teeth whitening and a control of any present pathology, such as caries, restorations defective
